Empty miles, cancelled customer work, and overflow subcontract demand are three reasons freight exchanges exist. UK haulage operators join them to fill gaps — not to replace every direct customer overnight.
Before you pay for any membership, sort Hire & Reward motor, Goods in Transit (GIT), and the certificates other members will see. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed Cover is an FCA-regulated UK broker (FRN 1033248). We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders. Broker fee is a flat 10%. We do not invent premiums or “exchange member” discounts, and we are not a Haulage Exchange partner or preferred insurer.

What a freight exchange is (vs broker vs direct)
Channel | How work arrives | Who you deal with | Typical insurance ask |
|---|---|---|---|
Direct customer | Your own sales book | Shipper / factory / retailer | Their onboarding pack — GIT, PL, EL, often custom forms |
Freight broker / forwarder | Broker places the load | Broker as intermediary | Same proof, often faster turnaround |
Freight exchange | Membership board: post or bid | Other members (carriers / posters) | Platform join gate + compliance profile other members can check |
An exchange is a marketplace with membership rules. It is not a substitute for an operator licence, and it is not motor insurance. It is a way to see return loads, overflow capacity, and subcontract opportunities that never hit your inbox.
Why operators join
Public themes from the UK haulage market are consistent — without copying anyone’s case study prose:
Return loads / empty miles — Fill the backhaul after a delivery instead of running home empty.
Fill gaps — Cover cancelled direct work or seasonal soft spots without hiring a salesperson overnight.
Find subcontractors — Post overflow when your own fleet is full; pick verified carriers when you need capacity.
Grow before buying another truck — Test lanes and utilisation before capital spend on the next vehicle.
None of that works if compliance docs are missing or expired. Price and feedback matter on a board; so does visible, current insurance.
An established UK example
Haulage Exchange is one of the UK’s best-known paid membership freight exchanges. Their public material describes finding carriers quickly, return-load economics, and a Trustd-style compliance layer so posters can weigh price, feedback, and verified documents together. For how they frame carrier discovery and checks, see their explainer on finding haulage carriers in less than four minutes.
That link is editorial industry context. Meshed has no partnership, preferred-broker status, or endorsement with Haulage Exchange or Trustd.
The insurance gate before day one
Most UK exchanges will not let you trade without proof of:
Hire & Reward motor — correct use class for carriage for reward
Goods in Transit — often a stated minimum limit (public join copy has commonly illustrated £5,000 — treat as example; check current rules)
Vehicle / HGV cover evidence as the compliance stack requires
Trustd-style verification means other members can see that you are insured and that documents have not lapsed. That visibility is a commercial filter, not a claim guarantee. Detail on what posters actually look at sits in our piece on certificate visibility on freight exchanges.

Mini-checklist — before you pay for any membership
Confirm H&R motor class and GIT limit match the work you will quote (not only the join minimum).
Have PL ready; have EL ready if you employ.
Check named insured = trading name on the profile.
Know excluded goods and subcontract / contingent positions.
Ask how the platform handles expiry alerts — and put the same dates in your broker diary.
Read the platform’s current join document list; do not rely on a blog summary.
Preferred partners vs independent brokers
Some platforms have a named preferred insurance partner for membership deals. That is their commercial arrangement — for example, Haulage Exchange has long worked with an exclusive insurance partner. Meshed is not that partner. We compete on cover fit, certificate clarity, and a flat 10% broker fee for operators who want an independent conversation about GIT limits and upload-ready evidence.

FAQs
Why do UK haulage operators use freight exchanges?
Mainly to cut empty miles with return loads, fill gaps when direct work softens, source or offer subcontract capacity, and grow utilisation before buying another truck. Exchanges are a marketplace alongside — not instead of — direct customers and brokers.
What insurance do I need before joining a freight exchange?
Expect Hire & Reward motor, Goods in Transit at least at the platform minimum (often illustrated publicly as £5,000 — verify current rules), and usually public liability. Employers’ liability applies if you employ staff. Match GIT to real load values, not only the gate.
Is Haulage Exchange the only UK freight exchange?
No. It is one of the best-known paid membership examples. Operators should compare membership rules, compliance checks, and fees for any board they join. Soft editorial context: haulageexchange.co.uk.
Is Meshed Cover recommended by Haulage Exchange?
No. Meshed is an independent FCA broker (FRN 1033248). Some exchanges name their own preferred insurance partner; Meshed is not that partner and does not claim endorsement.
Should I buy membership before arranging GIT?
No. Arrange Hire & Reward, GIT, and certificates first — or at least in parallel — so you can upload evidence as soon as the account opens. See the GIT join checklist.
