You cannot trade on many UK freight exchanges without proof of insurance — and expired documents can take you offline mid-week. Goods in Transit (GIT) is usually the hard gate; Hire & Reward motor, public liability, and employers’ liability sit alongside it.
This checklist is for operators preparing to join or stay live on a load board or freight exchange. It is insurance prep, not a platform promo. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed Cover is an FCA-regulated UK broker (FRN 1033248). We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders from a panel of insurers. Broker fee is a flat 10%, with no admin add-ons. We do not invent “from £X a month” GIT prices, and we are not a partner, preferred broker, or endorsed insurer for any freight exchange.

What “minimum GIT” usually means
Public join pages for major UK freight exchanges commonly ask for Hire & Reward motor cover plus a minimum Goods in Transit limit — often illustrated as a £5,000 floor. Treat that figure as an example requirement taken from public join copy, not a permanent rule. Always check the platform’s current membership conditions before you upload.
A minimum is a gate to join, not a risk match for the freight you will quote. A £5k GIT schedule that clears onboarding can still leave you underinsured on a high-value pallet, temperature-controlled run, or electronics load. Match the limit to the cargo and the conditions of carriage you accept — not only to the join form.
Some exchanges name a preferred insurance partner for membership deals. That is an industry fact about those platforms; it is not Meshed. We compete on cover fit, certificate clarity, and a flat 10% broker fee.
Documents to have ready before you upload
Build a labelled pack. Platforms and compliance layers (including Trustd-style checks used alongside exchanges such as Haulage Exchange) typically want clear PDF evidence, not a dump of every schedule page.
Hire & Reward motor — Correct use class for carriage for reward. Social, commuting, or own-goods-only class will not satisfy an exchange that requires H&R. Keep this with your motor specialist if that is how you place vehicle cover; Meshed focuses on the commercial GIT and liability side.
GIT schedule + limit — Policyholder name, period, limit basis (per load / per vehicle / aggregate), and any CMR or Europe territorial notes. If you run international or CMR liability, make sure the certificate or broker letter says so.
Public liability (PL) certificate — Often requested even when it is not the hard join gate. Yard, loading bay, and premises third-party risk sit here — not under GIT.
Employers’ liability (EL) certificate — If you employ anyone on PAYE. Statutory duty in Great Britain; platforms and shippers often ask for it as supplier due diligence anyway.
Operator licence evidence — O-licence disc / evidence as the platform’s compliance stack requires. That is licensing, not insurance, but it sits in the same upload folder.
Company ID pack — Incorporation, VAT, trading address. Platform KYC, not an insurance product — still block join if missing.
Name files clearly (GIT-evidence-2026-09.pdf, PL-certificate.pdf). Stale PDFs from last renewal are a common fail after a mid-term endorsement.
Questions to ask your broker before upload
Do not upload first and discover gaps after a load poster rejects you.
Is the GIT limit per load, per vehicle, or aggregate? The join form and your schedule may use different words. Align them before you advertise capacity.
Which goods are excluded? Alcohol, phones, consumer electronics, temperature-controlled cargo, and ADR often need endorsements or separate wordings. A clean £5k GIT does not automatically cover every consignment on the board.
Subcontracted carriage — Are you principal on the customer contract, or pure subcontractor? Do you need contingent GIT if someone else hauls under your booking?
Certificate format — Schedule, short certificate of insurance, or broker letter answering the platform’s exact questions? See our certificates guide for the difference.
Named insured vs trading name — Does the insured name on the certificate match the trading name on the exchange profile? Mismatches look like fake documents to compliance teams.
Why a £5k floor is often not enough for real freight
The join minimum exists so the platform can show members a baseline. Real freight values, contractual caps, and customer onboarding packs often sit higher. Without inventing premiums: if the goods on the trailer are worth more than your GIT limit (or your conditions of carriage expose you beyond what the policy pays), the shortfall is yours.
Risk-match the work you will quote on day one — return loads, overflow subcontract, and high-value lanes included — then set the limit. Raising GIT after you have already accepted a load is slower and more awkward than sorting it before membership goes live.
Expiry discipline
Compliance platforms send expiry alerts for a reason: when GIT, motor, or EL dates lapse, you can lose the ability to take loads until fresh evidence is uploaded. Treat those alerts as hard ops deadlines.
Ask your broker for renewal reminders as well as the platform’s. After bind or endorsement, request fresh evidence of cover before you re-upload — do not recycle last year’s PDF

FAQs
Do I need Goods in Transit insurance to join a UK freight exchange?
Usually yes. Public join requirements for major UK freight exchanges commonly require Hire & Reward motor cover and a minimum GIT limit (often illustrated as £5,000 — check current platform rules). Without current proof, you typically cannot go live or stay live on the board.
Is £5,000 GIT enough for freight exchange work?
It may clear a membership gate. It is often not enough for the loads you will quote. Match GIT to cargo value, conditions of carriage, and customer onboarding packs — not only to the minimum on the join page.
What documents do freight exchanges usually ask for?
Expect Hire & Reward motor evidence, GIT schedule or certificate, often public liability, employers’ liability if you employ staff, O-licence evidence, and company identity documents for KYC. Compliance layers such as Trustd-style checks store and monitor several of these with expiry alerts.
Is Meshed Cover a Haulage Exchange insurance partner?
No. Meshed is an independent FCA-regulated broker (Mesh'd Limited, FRN 1033248). Some exchanges name their own preferred insurance partner; that is not Meshed. We help operators get cover fit and upload-ready certificates at a flat 10% broker fee.
Can I upload my motor schedule as GIT proof?
Usually not. A motor schedule shows vehicle cover. Platforms checking load compliance want Goods in Transit evidence at the stated limit. Send a GIT certificate or broker letter — see haulage insurance certificates UK.
