Solicitor insurance in the UK is the cover stack around a practice: professional indemnity first (for SRA-authorised firms that is compulsory qualifying cover), then the commercial policies that sit next to it — employers’ liability if you have staff, cyber if you hold client data or run practice systems, office and public liability for the premises, and directors’ and officers’ cover if partners or a board can be sued personally for how the firm was run.

It is not one policy sold as a monthly price, and it is not the same as hiring an insurance disputes solicitor. Meshed is an FCA-regulated UK broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248. We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders, from a panel of insurers. Broker fee is a flat 10%, with no admin add-ons.

Deep product explainers already live elsewhere: Professional Indemnity Insurance UK, Cyber Insurance UK, Directors and Officers Insurance UK, Employers’ Liability Insurance UK, and Public Liability Insurance UK. This page is the solicitor / practice landing that ties that stack together.

Who this is for

UK solicitors’ practices and small law firms that need a coherent certificate set, including:

  • Sole practitioners and sole traders running an authorised practice

  • Limited companies and LLPs

  • Partnerships and multi-partner firms

  • Practices renewing SRA-qualifying PI and wanting EL, cyber, office, or D&O next to it

  • Firms whose clients or panels ask for evidence of PI (and often cyber) before work starts

We work with limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders. If you are looking for an insurance litigation lawyer rather than cover for your own practice, this is not that page.

Who we have helped

We place commercial covers for UK solicitor practices and professional-services firms in adjacent shapes: authorised practices that need qualifying PI on a participating insurer, firms that already have PI but need EL or cyber certificates to sit beside it, and sole traders whose previous quote treated them like a generic consultant instead of a regulated practice.

We do not invent named client logos on this page.

What solicitor insurance usually covers

PI is primary for solicitors. The rest of the stack depends on how you practise.

Professional indemnity is the claim if a client (or another third party) says your legal work caused them a financial loss — negligence, errors, omissions, defence costs, and settlements the policy agrees to, up to the limit. For SRA-authorised firms this is not optional marketing cover: it has to be qualifying insurance with a participating insurer, on terms that meet the SRA Minimum Terms and Conditions. Detail and claims-made mechanics sit on Professional Indemnity Insurance UK.

Employers’ liability is a legal duty once you employ anyone. The certificate has to be for at least £5 million from an authorised insurer. A self-employed consultant or locum is a different test — tell us who is on PAYE. Detail: Employers’ Liability Insurance UK.

Cyber is for ransomware, incident response, and client-data events on your systems. PI is not a substitute for cyber, even where a wording picks up a sliver of third-party data risk. Practices holding conveyancing files, ID documents, or matter data usually need both. Detail: Cyber Insurance UK.

Office / public liability is injury or property damage to visitors and third parties arising from the premises or day-to-day operation — not the legal advice itself. Detail: Public Liability Insurance UK. Buildings and contents for the office sit in the same conversation when you have a lease that expects them.

Directors’ and officers’ (D&O) is personal cover for partners, directors, or board members if they are sued for decisions about how the firm was run. It is not PI. Detail: Directors and Officers Insurance UK.

Ask us if you also need legal expenses, crime / fidelity, or run-off when a practice closes or merges. Those are asks, not extra ranking pages.

SRA and compulsory PI (plain English)

SRA-authorised firms must take out and maintain qualifying professional indemnity insurance with a participating insurer under the SRA Indemnity Insurance Rules. The cover has to meet the SRA Minimum Terms and Conditions (MTC). If you cannot obtain qualifying cover by the end of the extended / cessation windows the rules describe, the firm must cease practice — this is not a soft renewal reminder.

As set out in the current MTC, the minimum sum insured for any one claim (exclusive of defence costs) is at least £3 million where the insured firm is a relevant recognised body or a relevant licensed body, and at least £2 million in other cases (including many unincorporated practices). Defence costs must not have a separate monetary cap under the MTC. Those figures are the regulatory floor, not a recommendation for high-value work. Always check the current SRA MTC and participating-insurer list for your structure and indemnity period — we will not invent a “from £X” premium or a limit that only exists for a different profession.

The Indemnity Insurance Rules apply to authorised bodies and their principals. They do not apply in the same way to solicitors practising entirely outside SRA-authorised firms. If your model is freelance / non-authorised, say so up front so we place the right product rather than forcing a firm wording.

Clients still need the benefit of the indemnity the rules require. Do not try to contract below the minimum level of cover the rules set.

What it costs

Premium follows risk: practice areas, fee income, claims and notifications history, limit and excess, who is employed, cyber posture, and whether the PI must be SRA-qualifying on a participating insurer. A low-volume consultancy and a conveyancing-heavy practice with the same headcount will not price the same.

We will not publish a “from £55 a year” or “from £X a month” figure of the kind that appears on comparison-style package pages. That number is almost never the qualifying PI a regulated practice actually needs.

What you can control: an accurate proposal (work types, fee bands, previous insurers, open circumstances), notifying circumstances early, and not letting the retroactive date jump when you switch insurer.

How Meshed works

  1. You tell us the practice structure (Ltd, LLP, partnership, or sole trader), SRA authorisation position, practice areas, fee income, headcount, current PI / other covers, and renewal dates.

  2. We review the documents and flag gaps: qualifying PI vs general PI, EL, cyber, office/PL, D&O, run-off, and certificate wording clients or panels have asked for.

  3. We go to our panel and come back with options.

  4. You bind. We stay on for mid-term changes and renewal.

Straightforward SME risks are often quoted in minutes. Specialist practice areas, claims histories, or non-standard wordings take longer. We will say that up front.

FAQs

What is solicitor insurance?

The cover stack for a solicitors’ practice: qualifying professional indemnity first, then employers’ liability if you have staff, cyber for systems and client data, office / public liability, and D&O if partners or directors need personal cover for management decisions.

Do UK solicitors need professional indemnity insurance?

SRA-authorised firms must hold qualifying PI with a participating insurer under the SRA Indemnity Insurance Rules. That is compulsory for authorised practices, not optional. Solicitors practising entirely outside authorised firms sit under different rules — tell us your model.

What are the SRA minimum PI limits?

The current MTC set floors of £3 million any one claim (exclusive of defence costs) for relevant recognised / licensed bodies, and £2 million in other cases. Confirm the current MTC for your firm type and indemnity period. Many practices buy above the floor.

Does Meshed cover sole traders?

Yes. We place cover for limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders — including sole practitioners who need the commercial stack around their practice.

Is this the same as your professional indemnity page?

No. Professional Indemnity Insurance UK is the general PI product explainer. This page is the solicitor sector landing that starts with SRA PI and links the rest of the practice stack.

Does PI cover a cyber attack on the firm?

Not as a substitute for cyber insurance. Use Cyber Insurance UK for ransomware, incident response, and your own system outage. We will say if PI and cyber should be placed together so one incident is not bounced between them.

Do I need employers’ liability?

If you employ anyone, yes — it is a legal duty. Detail on Employers’ Liability Insurance UK.

Are you an insurer?

No. Meshed is a broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248.

How fast can we bind?

Clean renewals and standard SME packages can be same-week. New SRA-qualifying wordings, open claims or circumstances, or incomplete proposals take longer.

Where do I start?

Speak to us with your structure, SRA position, practice areas, and renewal dates. Share this page or the PI explainer with prospects who need a public URL.
