UK startups winning an Innovate UK (or similar UK grant) award are often asked for insurance proof in the grant offer letter, collaboration agreement, or annex — typically public liability, professional indemnity, and employers’ liability if you have staff, sometimes cyber for data-heavy projects. This page owns that grant / annex evidence job: what funders usually ask for, how it differs from a general startup pack map or accelerator membership proof, and what to send a broker before you draw down. It is not a second startup-insurance hub or a second accelerator page.
The wider pack map lives on Startup Insurance UK. Accelerator / incubator programme membership proof is Accelerator Incubator Insurance Requirements for UK Startups. Fundraising / data-room certificate timing is Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups. Product depth: Public Liability Insurance UK, Professional Indemnity Insurance UK, Employers’ Liability Insurance UK. Use those pages for products and pack mapping; use this page when the question is “our Innovate UK / UK grant award wants insurance proof in the annex — what do they mean?”

Why Innovate UK and similar grants ask for insurance proof
Grant offers protect public money, project partners, and (where relevant) host sites or end users of a demonstrator. Their conditions do not automatically cover your liability if a visitor is injured at a trial site, or if advice / software / hardware you deliver under the project causes a third-party claim. That is why award packs and collaboration agreements often require:
Public liability at a stated minimum (especially for in-person trials, demos, or partner sites)
Professional indemnity if you design, advise, or build under the project
Employers’ liability if anyone on the team is an employee
Sometimes cyber (customer / research data) for digital or data-sharing projects
Certificates or schedules naming your company, within a deadline before claim / drawdown / kick-off
This page vs the hubs (do not confuse them)

If Startup Insurance UK mentions grants in passing, that is pack context. This page owns the Innovate UK / UK grant annex proof / requirements job.
Typical timing for UK startups
Offer / award letter — read the insurance schedule or annex; note covers, limits, and deadline
Before project start / first claim — bind missing covers; request certificates that match the named limits
Collaboration agreement / partner site — PL (and sometimes PI) evidence is often re-checked for trials or demos
If you hire during the grant — add EL; see also the contractor→PAYE trigger if you convert contractors
If you raise while on the grant — fundraising certificate asks are a separate job: Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups
Do not wait until the monitoring officer chases. Placement and certificate issuance need a buffer — especially if they want PI + PL + EL on one evidence pack.
What “good” looks like for the grant
Current certificates / schedules for each cover they named (PL, PI, EL, and any cyber)
Limits that meet (or honestly negotiate) the annex minimum
Named insured matching Companies House / the award letter
Period covering the full project dates (and any demo / trial windows)
Clear activity description (SaaS, hardware, services, R&D) so the broker places the right PI / PL shape
If the project sits inside an accelerator programme, treat programme membership proof as a related but distinct job — Accelerator Incubator Insurance Requirements for UK Startups
Founders, sole traders, and early Ltds
Pre-seed sole traders and early Ltds win Innovate UK and similar awards every year. The proof ask follows the grant / collaboration annex, not whether you have raised. If you are a founder, sole trader, or small partnership with an award letter and an insurance clause, speak to us with the clause — we will say what we can place and what certificates we can produce.
What to send a broker before drawdown
Grant / Innovate UK insurance clause or annex (exact covers and limits)
Project start date and any demo / trial dates
Locations (lab, partner site, remote, shared workspace)
Headcount (employees vs contractors / founders only)
Current schedules if any
One-line description of the funded activity / deliverables
Prior claims or incidents
Clean files move faster. “We won an Innovate UK grant” without the annex slows certificates when finance is chasing claim eligibility.

FAQs
Do Innovate UK grants require insurance?
Many award letters and collaboration agreements include an insurance annex — especially for projects with trials, partners, or public-facing demos. Check the offer for covers and limits; produce certificates before kick-off / claim.
Is the grant body’s insurance enough for my startup?
No. Their arrangements protect the funder / programme. You still need your own PL / PI / EL (as applicable) for your project activities. That is why they ask for your certificates.
Is this the same as Startup Insurance UK?
No. Startup Insurance UK owns the general pack map. This page owns Innovate UK / UK grant annex proof and requirements.
Is this the same as accelerator / incubator insurance requirements?
No. Programme membership conditions live on Accelerator Incubator Insurance Requirements for UK Startups. This page owns the grant / annex job — even if you are in both at once.
What about fundraising certificates during the grant?
That is a different job — investor / data-room timing lives on Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups.
Are sole traders and founders in scope?
Yes. We place for Ltd, partnerships, and sole traders — speak to us about placement and evidence for your structure and grant annex.
Will you quote a “from £X a month” grant insurance price?
No. Premium depends on the risk and the covers required. We place from a panel at a flat 10% broker fee and will not invent a marketing price. Named customer quotes are off.
Are you an insurer?
No. Meshed is a broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248.
