UK startups joining an accelerator or incubator are often asked for insurance proof as a programme or membership condition — typically public liability, professional indemnity, and employers’ liability if you have staff, sometimes cyber or D&O for later cohorts. This page owns that requirements / evidence job: what programmes usually ask for, how it differs from a general startup pack map, and what to send a broker before onboarding. It is not a second startup-insurance hub.
The wider pack map lives on Startup Insurance UK. Fundraising / data-room certificate timing is Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups. First office / coworking PL trigger is First Office Coworking Public Liability for UK Startups. Product depth: Public Liability Insurance UK, Professional Indemnity Insurance UK, Employers’ Liability Insurance UK. Use those pages for products and pack mapping; use this page when the question is “our accelerator / incubator wants insurance proof to join — what do they mean?”
Meshed is an FCA-regulated UK broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248. We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders, from a panel of insurers. Broker fee is a flat 10%, with no admin add-ons. We do not invent “from £X a month” accelerator packs. Named customer quotes are off.
Why accelerators and incubators ask for insurance proof
Programme agreements protect the operator, mentors, demo-day venues, and other cohort companies. Their building or organisers’ policy does not automatically cover your liability if a visitor is injured at an event, or if advice / software you ship causes a third-party claim. That is why membership packs often require:
Public liability at a stated minimum (especially for in-person cohorts / demo days)
Professional indemnity if you advise, design, or build for others
Employers’ liability if anyone on the team is an employee
Sometimes cyber (customer data / SaaS) or D&O (board / raise stage) for later programmes
Certificates or schedules naming your company, within a deadline before kick-off
This page vs the hubs (do not confuse them)

If Startup Insurance UK mentions accelerators in passing, that is pack context. This page owns the programme membership proof / requirements job.
Typical timing for UK startups
Application / offer — read the insurance schedule in the programme T&Cs; note limits and deadline
Before kick-off / desk access — bind missing covers; request certificates that match the named limits
In-person cohort / demo day — PL evidence is often re-checked for venues
If you hire during the programme — add EL; see also the contractor→PAYE trigger if you convert contractors
If you raise during or after — fundraising certificate asks are a separate job: Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups
Do not wait until the Slack reminder from programme ops. Placement and certificate issuance need a buffer — especially if they want PI + PL + EL on one evidence pack.
What “good” looks like for the programme
Current certificates / schedules for each cover they named (PL, PI, EL, and any cyber / D&O)
Limits that meet (or honestly negotiate) the membership minimum
Named insured matching Companies House / the participation agreement
Period covering the full programme dates (and demo day if later)
Clear activity description (SaaS, marketplace, hardware, services) so the broker places the right PI / PL shape
If the programme shares a building or coworking floor, confirm PL applies at third-party premises — related but distinct from First Office Coworking Public Liability for UK Startups
Founders, sole traders, and early Ltds
Pre-seed sole traders and early Ltds join accelerators every week. The proof ask follows the programme agreement, not whether you have raised. If you are a founder, sole trader, or small partnership with an offer letter and an insurance annex, speak to us with the clause — we will say what we can place and what certificates we can produce.
What to send a broker before onboarding
Accelerator / incubator insurance clause or schedule (exact covers and limits)
Programme start date and any demo-day date
Location (remote, shared workspace, campus)
Headcount (employees vs contractors / founders only)
Current schedules if any
One-line description of product / services
Prior claims or incidents
Clean files move faster. “We got into an accelerator” without the annex slows certificates when ops is chasing day-one compliance.

FAQs
Do UK accelerators and incubators require insurance?
Many do as a membership or participation condition — especially for in-person cohorts. Check the programme annex for covers and limits; produce certificates before kick-off.
Is the programme’s insurance enough for my startup?
No. Their cover protects the organiser / venue. You still need your own PL / PI / EL (as applicable) for your business activities. That is why they ask for your certificates.
Is this the same as Startup Insurance UK?
No. Startup Insurance UK owns the general pack map. This page owns accelerator / incubator programme proof and requirements.
What about fundraising certificates during the programme?
That is a different job — investor / data-room timing lives on Fundraising Insurance Certificates for UK Startups.
What if the programme is in a coworking building?
You may have both a programme proof ask and a space PL ask. Space move-in detail: First Office Coworking Public Liability for UK Startups.
Are sole traders and founders in scope?
Yes. We place for Ltd, partnerships, and sole traders — speak to us about placement and evidence for your structure and programme.
Will you quote a “from £X a month” accelerator insurance price?
No. Premium depends on the risk and the covers required. We place from a panel at a flat 10% broker fee and will not invent a marketing price. Named customer quotes are off.
Are you an insurer?
No. Meshed is a broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248.
