UK haulage faces a double squeeze: not enough drivers coming through, and the cost of putting them on the road keeps climbing. That is the picture Radius has been warning about in trade press through early September 2026. This pulse is for operators — MDs, ops, yard leads — not brokers.

Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248. We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders. Broker fee is a flat 10%. We do not sell telematics, and we do not invent "we cut your premium by X%" claims.
The Radius / trade-press numbers
Coverage in The Haulier (4 September 2026) and Highways News reported Radius citing:
About 400,000 new drivers a year needed to match demand
Fewer than 2% of UK HGV drivers under 24; more than 55% aged 50–65
Training costs in road haulage +100% over 10 years (Dojo UK Inflation Index, as cited)
Haulage insurance +57% over the past decade
Staffing costs +44% in the last year (NI / wage competition among factors cited)
Those are their figures as reported in trade press — not Meshed data. Soft private car or van pricing elsewhere is not soft HGV / hire-and-reward: the haulage insurance line has been going the other way for a decade.
Why younger drivers harden the insurance line
As firms replace retiring drivers with younger ones, insurance often rises with inexperience — the same point Radius made in that coverage. Any-driver or young-driver schedules are not priced like a named, experienced yard list.
Meshed will not pretend telematics wipes that. The job is to keep the controllable bits clean so you are not paying for paperwork mistakes on top of market rate.
What operators can still control
Certificates that match the schedule — GIT / liability / EL proof that matches what is on risk. Wrong PDF = failed join or Friday chase. See Haulage insurance certificates UK.
Wording vs vehicles on the road — named drivers, vehicle schedule, hire-and-reward vs own-goods, territorial limits.
Named-driver discipline vs lazy any-driver — ask for the price of the schedule you actually run.
Broker fee you can see — Meshed charges a flat 10%. That does not invent a premium saving; it stops fee fog on a line already up 57% over ten years (Radius / trade press).
GIT ready for exchanges — use the Goods in Transit checklist; Trustd-style visibility only helps if the underlying pack is right.

FAQs
Has haulage insurance really gone up 57% in ten years?
That figure is from research cited by Radius in The Haulier / Highways News (September 2026). Industry cost trend — not a Meshed product claim.
Why does recruiting younger HGV drivers push insurance up?
Less experienced drivers are typically priced higher. With fewer than 2% of UK HGV drivers under 24 and more than 55% aged 50–65 (Radius-cited), replacing retirees can raise the insurance bill even when wages and training are already up.
Can telematics cut my haulage premium by a set percentage with Meshed?
Meshed does not sell telematics and does not quote invented savings percentages. Industry / Radius telematics claims belong to them. Our levers: certificates, wording, named drivers, flat 10% broker fee.
What should I send if costs and driver shortage are squeezing the fleet?
Schedule and certificates, named-driver list or ages, O-licence position, whose goods you carry, and any customer or freight-exchange form chasing proof. Start at speak to us.
Is a soft car or van market the same as soft HGV insurance?
No. Private car/van and hire-and-reward HGV / haulage commercial insurance are different markets. Do not budget as if "motor is soft" automatically applies to the truck and the load.
