For most UK fleet managers, rising operating costs are still the biggest challenge. Business Motoring (31 July 2026) reported Radius citing Continental research: 76% named rising operating costs as number one. This pulse is for haulage operators who feel that stack on every P&L.

The cost stack
When Continental / Radius say "operating costs", yards hear:
Fuel — still the loudest monthly line for many fleets
Wages / staffing — driver competition keeps pressure up
Repairs and downtime — one truck off the road is lost revenue
Insurance — motor, GIT, liability, EL — often treated as fixed until renewal week
Insurance is rarely the biggest pound. It is often the least examined between renewals.
Industry telematics claims — attribute, don’t wear them
The same piece cites research suggesting telematics can cut insurance claims 15–40% and premiums 10–25%. Those are industry / Radius claims, not Meshed figures. If you already run cameras or telematics, tell your broker — do not budget a press-release saving.
Soft private car/van markets do not mean hire-and-reward HGV or commercial haulage covers are soft.
What you can control on the insurance line
Certificates — match GIT / liability / EL proof to the schedule. Guide: Haulage insurance certificates UK.
Schedule hygiene — vehicles, named drivers, hire-and-reward vs own-goods, limits, excesses.
Broker fee clarity — Meshed is flat 10%. Know intermediary fee versus insurer rate.
GIT limits vs real load values — especially on freight exchanges. Checklist: GIT checklist for freight exchanges. Trustd-style visibility only helps if cover underneath is right.
Price the fleet you actually run — not a lazy any-driver template from three renewals ago.

FAQs
Do 76% of fleet managers really say rising costs are the biggest challenge?
Continental research as cited by Radius in Business Motoring (31 July 2026). Not a Meshed statistic.
Can Meshed cut my fleet insurance premium by 10–25% with telematics?
No Meshed telematics product, and no Meshed-branded savings percentage. The 15–40% / 10–25% figures are industry / Radius claims — attribute them; do not treat them as a Meshed offer.
Where does insurance sit in the haulage cost stack?
Usually behind fuel and wages in absolute pounds, but high impact when certificates fail a customer or exchange, or schedule errors meet a claim.
What should operators check before renewal if costs are the priority?
Vehicle and driver schedule accuracy, GIT limits vs loads, certificate pack for contractors / exchanges, excesses and conditions, and broker fee structure. Meshed: flat 10% · FRN 1033248.
Is "motor is soft" a reason to expect cheaper HGV haulage cover?
Not automatically. Soft car/van and commercial HGV / haulage insurance are different markets.
