Startup insurance after seed round

After a UK seed round, the insurance job usually changes in the same week the capital lands: investors ask about directors’ cover, hiring triggers employers’ liability, and the next enterprise customer wants PI (and often cyber) on a certificate before the contract starts.

This page is that post-funding trigger. The ongoing startup cover map sits on Startup Insurance UK. If you are payments, EMI, or otherwise regulated financial services, use Fintech Insurance UK instead.

Meshed is an FCA-regulated UK broker. Mesh'd Limited trading as Meshed is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 1033248. We place commercial covers for UK limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders, from a panel of insurers. Broker fee is a flat 10%, with no admin add-ons. We do not invent “from £X a month” startup packs.

What changes the day capital lands

Seed money rarely arrives alone. It usually brings four insurance-relevant shifts at once:

  1. Contracts — larger customers, longer liability clauses, and certificate deadlines in the MSA

  2. Headcount — first employees or a jump from contractors to PAYE

  3. Board — investors, non-execs, or option holders who want personal liability cover for people who run the company

  4. Customer due diligence — security questionnaires that ask for PI, cyber, and sometimes D&O evidence

Treat the raise as a cover review date, not a celebration that can wait until year-end.

Investor / board asks — D&O vs PI

Hiring trigger — employers’ liability

Once you employ anyone, employers’ liability is a legal duty in Great Britain. Detail: Employers’ Liability Insurance UK.

Product and customer risk — PI and cyber

If you sell software, implementation, or advice, professional indemnity is usually the first certificate an enterprise procurement team wants. Cyber becomes non-optional when you hold customer data or face security questionnaires. Detail: Cyber Insurance UK.

Fintech / payments exception

If you move money or need payments permissions, use Fintech Insurance UK instead.

A practical 30-day post-seed insurance checklist

  1. Company structure and raise stage, plus any investor insurance side-letter

  2. Cap table / board composition

  3. Current schedules and certificates

  4. Headcount plan — employees vs contractors

  5. Product one-pager

  6. Upcoming contracts that demand PI / cyber / liability limits

  7. Security questionnaire if one is in flight

  8. Claims or incidents to date

  9. Renewal dates

How Meshed places post-seed commercial cover

We place PI, cyber, employers’ liability, public liability / office where it applies, and D&O when the board or investors require it.

FAQs

What insurance do UK startups need after a seed round?

Most post-seed tech and SaaS companies review professional indemnity, cyber, employers’ liability once they employ anyone, and D&O if investors or a board require it.

Do seed investors usually require D&O insurance?

Many expect it before a board seat or as part of governance hygiene; some put it in a side-letter.

Is professional indemnity enough after raising?

Usually not on its own. PI answers client delivery risk. It does not replace D&O, EL, or cyber.

When does employers’ liability become compulsory?

When you employ anyone — it is a legal duty in Great Britain.

We are a payments / EMI startup — is this the right page?

No. Use Fintech Insurance UK.
